Small Discoveries, Structured Systems
Hospitality | Kerala · 2025
The Junior Naturalist Journal was developed as an experiential activity identity for CGH Earth, a hospitality brand widely recognised for its deep engagement with local ecosystems, culture, and responsible travel practices. The objective was not simply to create a children’s activity booklet, but to build a structured learning and exploration system that could translate the ethos of each resort into an experience that younger guests could actively participate in. The challenge lay in creating a format that felt educational without becoming instructional, visually engaging without feeling overly commercial, and flexible enough to adapt across multiple properties, landscapes, and age groups.
The project began with the development of a larger activity framework before the design phase was approached. Instead of treating the journal as a standalone creative asset, the system was planned as a modular programme that individual resorts could adapt based on their geography, biodiversity, local stories, and guest profile. The structure considered different age ranges, varying attention spans, and the balance between guided learning and open-ended discovery. A significant part of the process involved aligning the activity design with CGH Earth’s long-standing emphasis on local ethos, environmental awareness, and experiential hospitality. Rather than introducing fictionalised activities or generic nature trivia, the framework encouraged each property to build content rooted in its immediate surroundings, from native species and ecological observations to regional practices and cultural nuances. Following the master planning stage, individual properties were guided through the research and content identification process to ensure that each journal reflected the specificity of its location instead of feeling centrally standardised. The final design system was then developed to maintain consistency across the larger identity while still allowing every journal to retain a distinct local character.
